At Tohoku International School our core values, or whole school learning goals, are promoted through our uniquely developed 5 STARS. The STARS essentially form the backbone to all programs offered here, and we consider these attributes to be critical for the development of the whole child into caring global citizens.
Students should develop the appropriate skills necessary for clear and effective communication in both written and verbal forms.
Students should develop a passion for learning. They should strive to improve their knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live.
Students should not be afraid to take risks!
We encourage students to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things.
There is a high expectation that all students behave and act responsibly across many contexts and settings. All students are encouraged to be excellent role models to others through doing the right thing even in difficult circumstances.
All students are encouraged to be open minded in all their endeavors. Holding respect for others regardless of nationality, age, religion or ethnicity is paramount to forming healthy relationships with peers within the international community at the school and beyond.
Tohoku International School (TIS) provides a superb experiential learning environment for children to foster the development of their social, emotional, intellectual, and physical skills through an enriching and well-balanced academic program.
TIS Elementary School is an authorized International Baccalaureate
Primary Years Programme (IB PYP)
school. As an international community, we believe we learn best with and through one another, gathering from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The students, teachers, parents, and wider community all support students’ learning and are valued members of the TIS community. Our focus on student-agency sees TIS students taking ownership of their own learning.
TIS Secondary school is a vibrant community of learners using a variety of tools to deepen and extend their knowledge of the world. Students have opportunities to learn both individually and in a range of groups. Secondary School students from Grades 7 to 10 are offered a range of courses, including English, Math, History, Science, Geography, Japanese, Physical Education and Arts (Digital, Performing or Visual). Computer technology skills are integrated into coursework throughout the grades.
As part of our ongoing commitment to academic excellence, TIS has implemented the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Grades 11 and 12. This internationally recognized program provides our learners with the opportunity to excel and opens the doors to further education in universities around the globe.
At TIS, equality of opportunity is intrinsic, and this extends to our EAL students. Offering comprehensive support from G1-12, our balanced and flexible EAL program reflects the individual needs of EAL students. Providing support within an empathetic framework, the program takes place both within and outside of regular classrooms. This program employs strategies which allow for EAL students to successfully assimilate into the mainstream curriculum and reach their full academic potential.
TIS students study Japanese in classes that are suited to their level of Japanese language acquisition. They learn listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in order to communicate using Japanese. Furthermore, students use Japanese to inquire on various topics, deepen their knowledge, gain insights, and cultivate a global perspective. TIS supports the students’ development of their Japanese language abilities while honoring their multilingual identities.
The TIS Library is a center of knowledge and exploration designed to ignite the curiosity of our diverse student body. Our library serves as a dynamic space where students embark on a journey of inquiry, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. It is a place that encourages collaborative learning, independent study and a love of reading.
As an IB school, our library is committed to fostering an international-minded perspective, offering a collection of resources that reflect global perspectives and cultural diversity. Our diverse collection encompasses literature from around the world, including academic references that align with the IB curriculum, meeting the diverse interests and academic endeavors of our students.
Our knowledgeable and approachable librarian is always happy to help students and staff find what they are looking for and provide recommendations through displays, the library website and more. We connect to other international schools in Japan by participating in the Sakura Medal Competition and we involve the local community in our annual TIS International Storytime.
