Tohoku International School is a vibrant community of learners using a wide variety of tools to deepen their knowledge of the world. Students have opportunities to learn individually as well as in a range of groups.

Students in the Tohoku International School Secondary School (Grades 7 – 12) take a variety of courses, including English, History, Science, Mathematics, Japanese, Global Issues, Physical Education and Arts (Performing, Visual or Digital). Our trained English as an Additional Language (EAL) team assist students with limited English to succeed in our all-English classroom environment.

One of the features of Tohoku International School is the ability to explore the world. Teachers lead students on field trips around the Sendai area to learn more about the region. Often the highlight of the year, students look forward to participating in annual ski trips, and bi-annual trips – both domestic and abroad. In our Global Issues course, students are given the challenge to find ways to solve some of the biggest issues facing the world today. In partnership with other international schools around Japan and the world, we look for solutions and explore ways to inform the community about the issue and make a difference.

The Secondary School Program of Learning consists of courses in the following areas: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, The Arts, and Japanese Language. Computer technology skills via the ‘BYLT Program’ (Bring Your Own Laptop) are integrated into course work throughout the grades.
