Tohoku International School provides a comprehensive academic program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for foreign and Japanese families who seek a quality, challenging education in English for their children. Our staff is a highly-qualified team of international educators who are dedicated to the success of its students.

Tohoku International School has been serving the educational needs of the Sendai community for almost fifty years. Our school has a rich history, from our early days as a school for the children of Christian missionary families; we have transformed both in name and student diversity, from Sendai American School to Sendai Christian Academy and back to Sendai American School, and finally, to Tohoku International School in 1997 to more accurately reflect our international composition and mission.

Tohoku International School is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an internationally-recognized organization based in the United States) and by the Japanese Ministry of Education (Gakko Hojin).

TIS is sponsored by Nanko Gakuen Corporation since 1988 and governed in conjunction with the TIS Council, an advisory board composed of the Head of School and representatives from the business, government, educational communities, and TIS stakeholders. The TIS Council works closely with the Nanko Gakuen Corporation Board of Directors to develop school policies and operational procedures.

TIS is an active member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS) and Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS).
